November is here already, and it is certainly starting to feel wintery. The current Pirate topic has been enjoyed by all the children. They have enjoyed our pirate ship, the pirate arts and crafts and the variety of messy trays.
To get our Little Owls ready for Santa’s arrival, our new topic is Christmas. We will be enjoying a variety of festive crafts and practicing for the Christmas performance.

September school starters
January the 15th 2018 is the deadline for September school starters. We advise you get your school application in quick to prevent disappointment. Our local school, Witchampton First School welcome all parents/ guardians to come and look around their outstanding school. Due to their warm and friendly village school, you are sure to be put at ease about your child’s next step of education. Please see the link below for contact details.
SAFE ZONE : This is a behaviour management tool. The area is full of bean bags to provide a soft and safe area for children to sit in. There are three elements to this area. The first is a ‘how are you feeling?’ area. This is a poster with different feeling pictures and matching flash cards. The children can sit in the safe zone and look over the flash cards, giving them time to express how they are feeling, or talk with pre-school staff or a peer about the feeling pictures. This is to help them understand their feelings better.
The second part is the problem-solving section. Again, the children have flash cards as visual aids, on how to solve the problem they face e.g. someone has taken a toy, someone is not playing with them. The Little Owls team will guide them over to the pictures and the children can choose one of the cards they feel would best help them to move forward.
The last section, is the Calm Down zone. This area is for children that may need a little bit of quiet time to calm down, before returning to the group. There are a variety of quiet games, that can help return them to a positive and happy state. This will in turn allow them to manage their feelings and guess why they displayed their actions etc. Please ask the team for any further questions regarding the safe zone.
Extra Learning time
Dorset have recently disclosed the areas of need in children in Pre-school/First school. This year they have noticed that children’s writing and letters and sounds are lower than they have been. We are very lucky that our children enjoy both these areas. However, to support all our children further, we will be adding to our routine a one-to-one letter and sounds session and writing times each day. Each session will be different, depending on each child’s ability and focused around each child’s interests to engage their learning.
Are your contact details still the same? If you have changed your number, address or have any new medical information regarding your child, please ensure you notify us and we will amend your enrolment forms. This information is held to safeguard our children and ensure that they are safe in our care.
